Errant Waves of Brain – Diabolically Delicious Donuts and Brioche-based Treats, etc.

October 11, 2014 by marianne

What a gorgeous photo (not mine) Well, thought I'd be doing this, but - photo courtesy Flickr Calling All Carbs!  Today, I'm dreaming of sugar-crusted treats loaded with custard and fruit blended fillings!   Then, I went recipe - seeking!  There must be lots of other people like me out there - otherwise I wouldn't have so readily found all of these recipes to share on a morning such as this!  Perhaps Columbus would have turned around and … [Read more...]

All Quiet on the Eastern Front – Pumpkin-Ginger Dirtbombs (Re-Roll at Your Own Peril)

October 5, 2014 by marianne

Now that it is October, all is relatively quiet on that long spit of precarious land known as Cape Cod.  The Summertime clogging/overpopulation crowds are gone.  They've had a month to sweep the remnants of a busy Summer out to sea and life has throttled down from the loud roar to a subtle hum. In fact, one could argue that it is the most wonderful time of the year on the Cape.  The air is cool and crisp and the sun shines bright, albeit … [Read more...]

A River Runs Through It and The Stolen Photo of My Mom and Dad

October 3, 2014 by marianne

Mom and Dad - as seen in the cherished, stolen photo:   Well now, that's an odd title for a food blog - except to say that every once in a while the clouds part and you are struck with some awesome little irony and insight into yourself. You know this title from the autobiographical book by Norman Maclean or more popularly from the movie from 1992 directed by Robert Redford and starring Brad Pitt.  But, I have a different perspective … [Read more...]

Artfully-Combined: Peasant Food, Trastevere and Hunter-Style Chicken

October 3, 2014 by marianne

this is the way we change seasons - I found this beautiful mushroom while out on my walk with the dog yesterday. Honestly, can one ever run out of things to learn about Italy?  I know I sound like a broken record these days but my last trip only served to deepen my obsession with the place.  In such a small country, so many important events took place, so many groups of people gathered, grew and built, and the remnants of cultures and … [Read more...]

Call Me Old-Fashioned; Redux Fall 2014 – Broccoli Casserole with Three Cheeses

October 1, 2014 by marianne

Some old-fashioned recipes just stick with you don't they?  So go ahead, call me old-fashioned. I'm ok with that. I am a big broccoli fan.  I sauté it into my omelets in the morning and I adore it smothered in Hollandaise.  All of those canned soup-based casseroles aside, what stands out in my mind, was a cheesy casserole I had when I was worked in the Corporate world (in the stone age as Ryan would say) at a luncheon on our floor.   … [Read more...]

Editorial Bored – It’s All About Survival, Right?

October 1, 2014 by marianne

photo courtesy NYT In the print world, it's all about survival, right?  Question is, can one increase one's chances of survival by publishing the same hard copy stories you uploaded to the internet several days earlier?  Am I missing something here???? Last week, I wrote the following critique of the NYT Dining Editorial Board and then put it in my "pause" file.  I got to wondering what might be going on there.  I was dismayed.  Then I … [Read more...]

Not Above Bribery – The Chocolate-Orange Scone and the Importance of Using Your Best Chips

September 26, 2014 by marianne

I love pairing Chocolate and Orange.  It's a classic.  I should write a separate post about the quality of chocolate chips.  And, I will.  But, for the purposes of this post.  I'm saying, when you're trying to make a good impression,  "use your best chips". What a difference they make! I am notorious for grabbing big bags of Nestle's Chocolate Chips when I see them on sale at the grocery store.  Never white chocolate though - that's a whole … [Read more...]

Hazelnut-Ginger Shortbread Cookies

September 25, 2014 by marianne

I've got the urge to get back into the kitchen to bake something, every day.  On Tuesday, I got to thinking about the Pistachio Shortbread Cookies from Leslie Mackie that I made last year.  This recipe was posted on Leite's Culinaria. I found myself imagining a light and buttery shortbread with nice little pieces of crystalized ginger and hazelnuts, a nut to love. Here is my new little cookie, perfect for a rainy day with a cup of … [Read more...]

It’s a Great Day for Apple-Cinnamon Whole Wheat Scones

September 23, 2014 by marianne

my favorite apple photo so far this season I'm heading off to the city to meet a friend for lunch.  It couldn't be a more glorious morning for the first day of Autumn, and I'm going to try really hard to accept that it isn't Summer any longer in the technical sense, even though it has felt like Fall since I got home from Italy. I decided that delivering a little gift to my friend was a perfect excuse for baking something. Of course … [Read more...]

Geoffrey Chaucer, The Last Day and Our Visit to Piazzale Michaelangelo

September 23, 2014 by marianne

"All Good Things Must Come to an End."  But, why?  Many, if not all existential questions could be wrapped around that one.   If I could, I would have it out with that person, Geoffrey Chaucer, who penned those loathsome words in the 1300s.  I'd muster every ounce of my physical strength and strike upon him my most vicious verbal assault and argument………. After our second day in Florence, I awoke with a certain sinking feeling, knowing time was … [Read more...]
