Grieving and Yearning for Paris, an Addendum

November 24, 2015 by marianne

who could believe, after days such as this? who can believe at all? Not one single day has gone by since Friday, November 13, that I haven't re-imagined myself back in Paris, combing, sponging, soaking, feeding, enveloping, and basically dancing a jig in my heart every moment that I was there.   For now, at least, my heart is broken for all Parisians and for the City itself.  Beyond the deep sadness I feel for the people of Paris, I feel a … [Read more...]

Correcting for Short Shrift – All Hail the Eastham Turnip and A Couple More Recipes

November 21, 2015 by marianne

All Hail the Eastham Turnip - far be it for me to argue with that - photo courtesy the Cape Codder This just may be the best week of the year for recipes and nostalgia……. Could it be that there is an inverse relationship between your rating of vegetable sides and the amount of press it gets, both here and in the localized media?  In this case, yes.  But, when a newspaper captions its feature, "All Hail the Eastham Turnip." you have to pay … [Read more...]

Julia Child, Mincemeat, My Mother in the Thanksgiving Kitchen and a Jean-Georges Addition

November 18, 2015 by marianne

Reading today's New York Times Food Section sent me reeling back to days of old with my Mother in the kitchen.  Julia Child and my Mom are inextricably linked in my mind and my heart, as I first was introduced to Julia, as I have written here before, in front of a black and white tv in our living room.  My Mom loved Julia and Graham Kerr and made it a point of watching them as often as possible.  I was interested. As I read the article today … [Read more...]

one half can of gorgeous organic pumpkin was staring me in the face…….. We are all currently inundated with pumpkin recipes aren't we?  Do we indeed need another?  I'm surprised there isn't pumpkin spice latté toothpaste out there yet…... Why We Love Pancakes; Soufflé for Breakfast – Pumpkin Spice Dutch Baby with Sliced Pears

November 13, 2015 by marianne

photo courtesy Sugardishme.com Who wouldn't want a Soufflé for breakfast if given the chance? We all have our weaknesses which border on addictions, don't we?  The list of most probable foibles can begin with shopping, drinking, wasting time, operating in life without a plan, avoiding reality, spending too much time on the internet on various and sundry types of sites, you know……. But, on my list, the number one addiction is food. Enjoying … [Read more...]

Slowly Succumbing to the Season – My Gingerbread Scones

November 10, 2015 by marianne

waiting for: Ok, so I'm not that far along yet….. I'm somewhere between straddling and succumbing.  But, I'm not totally succumbing yet. Last week I got to still pretend it was almost-Summer.  In November, when life gives you a few days when you can work outside in shirtsleeves and shorts, well you just dive right in there, don't you?  I do. This week, I'm going to try to eek my way into a bonafide Autumnal mode. Each and every … [Read more...]

November 8, 2015 by marianne

the "Do Tell" Peony (photo courtesy Hollingsworth Peonies)  honestly could be my new all-time favorite Pssst, don't tell anybody, but I am so enjoying this Fall here in New Jersey.  It has just been the greatest collection of glorious sunny days that I can honestly remember, hasn't it?  Enjoying my flowers and having all these weeks to be and work outside have been a great bonus for me, right up through this past week of 70F+ days.  I'm … [Read more...]

The Wonders of Old Pan Sauces – Chicken with Apples, Prosciutto and Fontina with Apple Cider Sauce

November 4, 2015 by marianne

Ok, so I'm on a Fontina, Apple and Prosciutto thing.  No one will ever have to worry about accusing me of having an original idea daily……... I learned a lot from Earl Peyroux about pan sauces back in the 1970s.  To this day some of my favorite recipes are from his repertoire.  There's Pork Chops with Apples and his Chicken in Tarragon Cream sauce.  I also love the Chicken in Raspberry Cream sauce from my Winterthur Cookbook.  Many times there … [Read more...]

Updating Gluten-Free Pumpkin-Corn Griddle Cakes: with Ricotta and Cider

November 2, 2015 by marianne

You can refer to my earlier post for the original recipe. https://kitchen-inspirational.com/2015/10/14/gluten-free-pumpkin-corn-griddle-cakes-with-toasted-walnuts-and-dried-cranberries/ As I continue my experimentation in making my own gluten-free flour combinations, I have found that the absence of a firm "structure" can be a problem - but, if you are willing, as I am, to put up with a little looseness in favor of an über-light result, then, … [Read more...]
