Mid-Summer Whimsy – Phlox, Deer and Butterfly Chasing

July 12, 2013 by marianne

Ok, so George says butterfly "chasers" are old, white-haired, wear funny hats and run around with nets.......  Do I care about this image?  Um, No!  Not, when I can get these:                    Ok, so I had a little fun with the iphone camera in the yard yesterday afternoon.  In the morning it was the wild raspberries (iphone and 35mm).  In the afternoon, butterflies.   Early am, after driving Ryan to the train, it was … [Read more...]

Some Days Life Gives You Lemons, Some Nicer Days it’s Wild Raspberries

July 11, 2013 by marianne

more photos from the yard:           Sometimes life gives you lemons and we all know we are supposed to make Lemonade.   I, frankly,  am fine with lemons as long as they are in the context of all you can do with them in the kitchen.   Sometimes life gives you extra special little surprises - right outside you very own door.  Yesterday I was out doing a little roaming around and couldn't help but take the camera to these amazingly … [Read more...]

First and Foremost, When It Comes To Summer, I am “Fruit Forward”

July 10, 2013 by marianne

Hands Down, my favorite picture of the Summer - of Santa Rosa Plums - courtesy Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood Calif. -  hoping to visit there in September I love listening to people talking about wine.  Even though it's all a little overwhelming to me, the phraseology they use  - evoking flavors, tanins, fruits other than grapes, woods, smoke, etc. --- is intriguing and draws me in.  And then there are the rituals of swirling, resting and … [Read more...]

Under My Skin

July 6, 2013 by marianne

Ufizzi (image courtesy VirtualUfizzi.com) Perhaps it is the book, recommended to me by a friend after I returned from Taormina, and which I just finished, Elizabeth Street - a story based in history, of a Hoboken, NJ family which emigrated from near Naples in the early 20th century, as did many of our ancestors.   I could not read it quickly - I needed to read it slowly...... Perhaps it is that sensation that occurs each year following … [Read more...]

What Grows Together, Goes Together; When “Tis the Season” Has a Whole Different Meaning, Now that’s just Plum……..

July 3, 2013 by marianne

brought this bee balm up to the Cape from Walter's in Bernardsville and I think I made someone  happy! The other day I was watching a show out of one eye on the Cooking Channel while doing something else - I didn't catch the name of the show or the chef's either, but my ears perked up when she relayed this line, "What Grows Together, Goes Together".  She elaborated that the context of this was timing - that what is growing at the same time … [Read more...]

The Great Switcheroo; While Waiting for Local Heirlooms

July 2, 2013 by marianne

Happy July! (missed yesterday, the 1st - too busy rowing around in the backyard after those downpours in the morning - yikes - I don't think I have ever seen the pooling of the water around our house like that before).  At least, I think it is Happy July - the weather here on the east coast is dastardly - and I am hoping so that it will blow out to sea and QUICKLY!!!) Well, so you know I recently went off on a great tear in reaction to … [Read more...]
